Decorative wall panels are often selected from images showing only the exposed face. Procurement needs the substrate, finish, backing, edges and fixing method as well. These details affect installation coordination and the evidence required for the intended location.

Describe the complete build-up

Ask for a cross-section identifying each layer and its thickness. Record the finished module size, edge profile, joint layout and visible face. If panels connect to a support frame or adhesive system, identify those components and who supplies them. Avoid comparing only the total thickness across different constructions.

Coordinate the room

Provide wall dimensions, corners, openings and access panels. Ask the installer to review substrate preparation, fixing compatibility and the proposed joints. Where fire or other regulated performance is relevant, request evidence for the appropriate assembly and have the project reviewer assess its scope.

Sample and packing checks

  • Representative face, edge and joint detail.
  • Color or texture range under expected lighting.
  • Panel labels matching the installation layout.
  • Protection that can be removed without damaging the finish.

A sample board can establish appearance but may not demonstrate the installed system. Consider a mockup where joints or alignment are central to the design. Keep maintenance and replacement access in the approval process rather than treating them as issues for the installer to solve later.
