A lock inquiry needs the geometry of the door preparation as well as the desired appearance. Backset, fixing centers, faceplate dimensions and spindle arrangements can differ between otherwise similar locksets. Replacing a lock in an existing door is especially sensitive because the available openings may limit the options.

Record the existing or proposed preparation

Use a dimensioned drawing and clear photographs showing both door faces and the edge. Include leaf thickness, opening direction and frame strike arrangement. Identify whether the inquiry covers a lock body alone or a complete set with cylinder, handles, escutcheons and keys.

Define the operating function

Describe how the door should operate from each side in normal use and in an emergency. Ask the responsible designer to translate that need into an appropriate function. Do not substitute a familiar residential lock function into a commercial opening without review.

Clarify keying and maintenance

  • Individual keys, keyed-alike groups or a managed key system.
  • Quantity of keys and the identification method.
  • Replacement cylinders and compatible spare parts.
  • Installation instructions and maintenance access.

Before ordering a large quantity, test fit a sample in the actual door construction where possible. Keep the preparation drawing with the model reference so that future replacement orders do not rely on a photograph of the handle alone.

AN Sourcing buying notes. These are practical procurement checklists; specifications, service scope and destination requirements should be confirmed for the actual order.
