Hinge descriptions often combine length, width, thickness, bearing construction and finish in a short code. Ask for a drawing that separates these features. Do not infer a complete specification from a familiar-looking size designation or assume that all manufacturers measure a folded and open hinge in the same way.
Link the hinge to the door
Provide the leaf and frame materials, weight, dimensions, intended frequency of use and any existing hinge preparation. Ask the supplier to identify the suitable hinge arrangement and the conditions behind any load claim. The number and position of hinges should be confirmed for the opening rather than guessed from a catalogue photograph.
Review finish and fasteners
Request material identification and a finish sample for visible hardware. Confirm screw type, length, head form and whether the package includes separate screws for different substrates. A strong hinge can still fail to perform if its fixing arrangement is unsuitable.
Sample checks
- Open dimensions, leaf thickness and hole positions.
- Knuckle and pin arrangement against the approved drawing.
- Movement, visible damage and finish consistency.
- Packaging labels that identify the exact model.
If ANSI/BHMA certification is specified, verify the listed model and relevant scope. A certificate for one model or finish should not be assumed to cover a changed construction. Keep the approved sample reference on the purchase order for repeat production.
