A delivery term is incomplete without the relevant named port or place and the agreed rule version. Asking for an FOB or DDP price without that location can leave suppliers pricing different scopes. Write the intended destination and receiving conditions into the inquiry before comparing freight-inclusive offers.
Separate cost and risk
Incoterms rules allocate specified responsibilities between seller and buyer. They should not be treated as a complete sales contract or a payment schedule. Cost responsibility and the point where transport risk transfers are separate questions. Ask the parties to explain both against the proposed route.
Choose the term for the shipment
FOB and CIF are maritime rules, while DDP can apply across transport modes. The appropriate choice also depends on the handover arrangement and the parties' ability to perform their obligations. For containerized movements, discuss the actual carrier handover with a competent logistics adviser rather than defaulting automatically to a familiar abbreviation.
